The team at Poe Travel always loves to see photos of our clients on the go, out and about exploring destinations all over the world with the enriching itineraries we have put together just for them. This love has been increased exponentially in the last year since our clients, and the rest of the world, were grounded and confined to home. For the well-seasoned traveler, this was hard to say the least, and we’re so happy to see some of our clients getting on the road (or in the air!) again.

The Smith family recently decided to get very adventurous indeed and jetted off to Alaska for an in-depth exploration. First, they spent a night in Seattle…because who really needs an excuse to spend a night there?! The next day, they flew off to Anchorage, where they settled in for the night. Their expert guide from our trusted friends at Abercrombie & Kent reached out to them that night to arrange everything for their Northern Lights tour the next day. This tour is very much weather dependent, so it varies for each traveler.

The next day, they set off in search of the Northern Lights, and we think you’ll agree from their photographic evidence that they FOUND THEM! Their knowledgeable guide was well-equipped with years and years of experience forecasting the lights and knew the best spots to take them for optimal viewing and photo opportunities.

After their Northern Lights quest, the next day’s drive passed through the Anton Memorial Tunnel, the longest in North America. Arriving in Whittier, they boarded their afternoon cruise to Blackstone Bay aboard a small expedition boat, where they were able to explore this fjord with their naturalist captain, marveling at the Chugach Mountains as they approached two tidewater glaciers and spotted plenty of wildlife and seabirds.

Their last day in the Anchorage area was spent adventuring down the Matanuska River to its source from which it takes its name, the Matanuska Glacier. Their expert guide was on-hand to help them explore Alaska’s largest road-accessible glacier.

It was off to Denali next for the Smith family. On the way to the charming village of Talkeetna, they enjoyed views of Denali and the Talkeetna Mountains. It’s hard not to be charmed by this village, which epitomizes Alaskan towns with its astounding natural beauty and its population of sled dog mushers, bush pilots, artists, and—of course—plenty of moose!

After settling in for a good night’s rest, the next day found the Smith family zipping off on a Denali flightseeing adventure! They flew to within six miles of Denali’s summit, which sits 20,320 feet above sea level and is the highest in North America. They were awed by the snow-capped mountains and glacier-filled valleys as they explored the south and east faces of Denali, viewing the Ruth Glacier and the mile-high granite walls of the Great Gorge. Of course, the highlight of this incredible experience was getting to land on a glacier, stepping outside and enjoying the solitude of the Alaska Range…and of course posing for a phenomenal photo!

What’s a trip to Alaska without some traditional dog sledding? Thankfully, the Smith family will never know, as that’s exactly what they did the next day. This was the last full day of their trip, and they definitely packed it full of fun right until the very end. At the Talkeetna kennels of Iditarod champion Dallas Seavey, the Smiths were treated to a dryland mushing tour in which they got to meet the dogs (including this year’s puppies, aww!) and learn about how these endurance athletes are raised and trained. After learning about these incredible canines and the life of a musher, the Smiths got to climb aboard a wheeled racing rig and head out on an exhilarating ride through the Talkeetna woods. Talk about Alaskan adventure!

It was only reluctantly that they left this snow-filled dreamscape the next day, returning home with incredible photos and even better memories. We’re so glad the Smiths chose to share their phenomenal mementos with us, and we can’t wait to see where they decide to Go Away next.
