There’s always been something incredibly special about Maroma, A Belmond Hotel. On the east coast of Mexico in the Riviera Maya, this little gem is beyond charming and totally infused with the local culture, excellent service, and the luxe, sophisticated feel of all Belmond hotels.

Maroma has been closed for more than 18 months for a total renovation. In very exciting news, it is all set to reopen on May 25th, 2023. Bookings for the general public open up later this month, and we fully expect a mad rush to get a room or suite at this haven.

However, Poe Travel clients don’t have to be part of the booking mayhem and instead will enjoy an exclusive two-week booking window before booking becomes available to everyone else. This means that you can contact your Poe Travel advisor RIGHT NOW to get booked for a stay at Maroma next year!

Maroma Reimagined

Multiple members of the Poe Travel team have visited Maroma in the past, as have many of our clients. It was already incredibly highly rated by all, so we can only imagine that these fresh renovations are going to take it up a notch.

The New Design

Internationally renowned designer, Tara Bernerd, is at the helm of the comprehensive restoration, working hand-in-hand with local artisans to honor Mexican heritage. Set on an unrivaled beach resort, each of the 72 accommodations are spread across Maroma’s private stretch of sand—of which three quarters now have ocean views, including a spacious new waterfront suite complete with private pool and garden. The property’s three pools have been completely redesigned, featuring Sukabumi tiles hand-made from volcanic stone, in the same vibrant turquoise tones as the region’s many natural cenotes.

Fresh Flavors

The culinary experience of Maroma has always been a huge focus, and that remains true in a post-renovation world too. Mexican-born Executive Chef Daniel Camacho will continue his legacy of celebrating his country’s rich culinary diversity at Casa Mayor restaurant. Working on a sustainable provenance approach, 90% of ingredients will be sourced from Mexico and almost half from the Yucatán Peninsula itself. A proud member of #PescaConFuturo, promoting sustainable fishery and aquaculture, freshly caught seafood will be sourced from Amigos de Sian Ka’an.

A Focus on Wellness

The spa has also been given a total facelift. Founded on the principles of nature and vitality, wellness at Maroma will take on a new dimension with the launch of the first Guerlain Spa in Latin America. Feel the vital flow of healing energies from the jungle oasis and wide-open sea in the newly renovated biophilic space. In this temple for rejuvenation and place of deep spirituality, treatment rooms will look out onto the jungle. Centered around balance and harmony, Guerlain creates a unique spa menu with its iconic face and body treatments and exclusive experiences designed around the Mayan wellness philosophy, sound and healing rituals.

Venues for All Occasions

Maroma’s palm-fringed shores, fragrant gardens, and jungle paradise make for a spectacular setting for special celebrations—from Mayan rituals to LGBTQ+, Kosher, or civil weddings and ceremonies. For hotel takeovers and private buyouts, you will have access to nine outdoor venues including a brand new all-weather palapa. Complete with floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor deck, the palapa can comfortably accommodate groups of up to 200.

Bee Sustainable

Finally, sustainability is a huge deal in the travel industry these days, as it should be, and Maroma has a very special focus that has us buzzing.

Maroma has a long history of working with local organizations—and will continue with Fundación Selva Maya and Mayahuum—to protect the endangered Melipona bee, which is fundamentally important to the ecology of the Yucatán Peninsula.

In an effort to go even further, a new partnership with Guerlain will generate a project bold in vision and ground-breaking in its scope, that will serve to amplify this commitment. Combining a legacy of caring, research, and community programs, the collaboration will include expanding resident hives, unveiling a new Melipona sanctuary for educational guest experiences, and introducing Guerlain's Bee School and "Women for Bees" initiatives into Yucatán communities.
